– The 178th Medical Group held a change of command ceremony for incoming commander, Col. Matthew Moorman, at Springfield Air National Guard Base in Springfield, Ohio, Feb. 5.

The outgoing 178th Medical Group commander, Col. Charles Shurlow, welcomed Moorman and spoke about the highlights of his previous position.
“Moorman is more than qualified to take over command of the medical group,” said Shurlow.

Moorman has more than 26 years of military experience. His Air Force career began at the 178th Wing, where he flew the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be back,” said Moorman. “I want to focus on why we provide our services and products.”

Shurlow will take over Moorman’s previous role as State Air Surgeon for Ohio.

“I have taken care of the best Air National Guard unit in the world,” said Shurlow.

He spoke about the medical group’s accomplishments during his time of leadership.

“We were one of the top three during inspections, including active duty,” said Shurlow. “That was a great accomplishment.”

Under Shurlow’s leadership, the medical group went on two temporary deployments to Germany, and one temporary deployment to Serbia.

“We went to Landstuhl to see the Army operation, and then to Ramstein to see the Air Force operation,” said Shurlow.
