The 178th Intelligence Squadron activation and assumption of command ceremony was held Oct. 17 at the Yoxford Inn here.

During the ceremony, Col. Mike Roberts, the commander of the 178th Fighter Wing gave command of the Intelligence Squadron to Colonel Sutch.

The ceremony's unveiling of the 178 IS flag symbolized the official stand-up of the new squadron.

The mission of the 178 IS is to provide intelligence support to two areas of the National Air and Space Intelligence Center, said Colonel Sutch. The squadron leads the Distributed Common Ground System Analysis and Reporting Team mission and supports the Foreign Material Exploitation mission, said Colonel Sutch.

"The intelligence problems that need to be solved are increasingly complicated," said Colonel Sutch. "What we do is provide a deeper analysis and look for trends not usually seen."

"The road ahead as we press on with the intelligence squadron is hard, but the future is bright," said Colonel Roberts.

The 178 IS will be comprised of approximately 100 members, which include Guardsmen, active-duty servicemembers, contractors and civilians.
